Mountainside 24/7 Animal Emergency

WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN YOUR PET IS HOSPITALIZED

At Mountainside we understand that being apart from your pets can be stressful at the best of times, let alone when they are hospitalized due to an accident or illness. We work hard to ensure your pet's stay with us is as comfortable and soothing as possible. Whilst we take the time to support your pet, we hope that reading this may alleviate any concerns you may have.

An injury, illness or emergency happens to almost every pet at some point during their lifetime. It can be a sudden illness, an unexpected wound, or maybe a poisoning from ingesting a toxic substance. No matter the cause, emergencies and veterinary stays happen. At times like these, your pet may require 24-hour monitoring and care and at Mountainside we are proud to be able to offer that.

While your pet is in the hospital, they will receive around the clock monitoring and treatment by our wonderful team of veterinary assistants, veterinary technicians and Veterinarians.

During their stay we aim to have our doctors call at least once per day to give you a detailed update and keep you aware of the options for ongoing treatment and recovery. Of course, if a new situation occurs or your pet's health status changes, we will be in touch. In general, we operate on a 'no news is good news' policy, but you are more than welcome to call our front desk for a more general update anytime of the day or night.

We have a state-of-the-art facility here with multiple wards and an ICU space all set up in much the same way as a human emergency room and hospital. Many pets receive intravenous fluid therapy while in the hospital, some will be receiving oxygen therapy, others intensive care or surgical interventions. Of course, the treatment plan will vary according to your pets needs and will be aligned with our discussions to ensure we are all on the same page.

Throughout your pets stay, you can expect to be updated periodically on the financial status of your pet's treatment, purely to reduce any surprises for you at the end of their stay with us. If you would ever like more detail on this or to check in more frequently on this topic, our wonderful staff would be happy to update you.

For the health and recovery of your pet and other pets, we ask that you generally steer away from regular visiting hours as many pets become stressed following a visit thinking that they were perhaps going home that instant. With that said, there are many cases where the medical team feels it is in the pet's best interest to have visits from their loving family. If so, the team will speak with you about setting that up and this typically occurs in an exam room to allow you some one-on-one time.

The end goal for all of us to get your pet back to you happy and healthy at home. Whilst this is not always a reality, we will work closely with you towards the best possible outcome.

Once your pet is ready to be discharged, we will discuss with you the date and time to come to get your furry friend. Your pet's aftercare instructions will be discussed with you along with any necessary medication. It's a great idea to bring with you any questions about caring for your pet after a hospital stay, as our medical team will be going over everything with you at that time.

Once you feel comfortable knowing what to do after your pet is discharged, you and your pet can go home for rest and recovery. Knowing what to expect and how to care for your loved one will alleviate some of the worries associated with their recovery. If you have any questions or concerns once you have returned home, we encourage you to give us a call anytime of the day or night at 604-973-1247.
